(Rome, Georgia) – Georgia Northwestern Technical College is already planning the Second Annual Rome’s Incredible Race after this year’s turnout in Downtown Rome on June 30. Record heat which reached temperatures well above 100-degrees for the duration of the race didn’t appear to slow down the teams.

Monica and Jennifer Sheppard were the winners of the inaugural “scavenger hunt” event. The race lasted approximately two-and-a-half hours. Thirty-five teams took part in the fundraiser for the charities “Cancer Navigators” and “Summit Quest” in Floyd County, Georgia. These charities help with the wellness of cancer patients, as well as their children.

Developed by Georgia Northwestern’s Student Leadership Council and Student Life office, the race was designed for the college and its students to be more involved in the community. “We are a part of Floyd County and its history,” said GNTC Student Affairs Director David McBurnett. “So, we want everyone at the college to become an active part in this region.”

Designed in the likeness of television’s “Amazing Race” series, “Rome’s Incredible Race” led teams through a series of ten challenges found in and around the businesses of Downtown Rome. From riding the “Roman Holiday” for a riverboat ride leading to one challenge to taking Rome’s trolley service while scouring the downtown area for clues, the race brought the college and the businesses closer together in a brand new way.

“This really took off and we are proud to be planning it again for next year,” said McBurnett. For more information on Rome’s Incredible Race 2013, contact David McBurnett at dmcburnett@gntc.edu or at 706-295-6933.
