Oakwood University, Huntsville, Alabama – Round two of the Georgia Northwestern – Oakwood University series left off where it ended in Rome just two weeks ago. The very physical and fast-paced contest in the confines of Oakwood’s Ashby Gymnasium in Huntsville, Alabama Saturday would come down to the final free throws once again.

Mariah Price, Kiarra Parks, and Sierra Smith would go 7-of-8 from the free throw line in the final two minutes to help the Lady Cats secure the tough road win at four-year program Oakwood University, 80-75.

Price, a freshman Lady Cat guard from Summerville, Georgia, would lead all scorers with 24 points in Georgia Northwestern’s fourth win of the young season.

The 5-foot-8 forward who averaged a triple-double in her senior season last year at Chattooga High School (GA) would go 3-of-4 from three-point land and work the boards for nine rebounds Saturday night. As a team, Georgia Northwestern (4-4) would hit three-pointers at a 40-percent click (6-of-14) on the night.

“Mariah played a great all-around game,” said Georgia Northwestern Women’s Head Coach Jim Williams. “The team really matured tonight. We saw the defense really step up. But Mariah especially put a great game together here in Huntsville. She led our attack for most of the night.”

Lady Cats freshman forward Odessa Person would set a record mark for GNTC. The 5-foot-10 Lineville, Alabama native would clean the road glass for 21 rebounds and clean the nets for 12 points.

“Odessa did huge board work for us tonight,” said Williams. “She’s a tough player in the paint. She crashed the board and it set the tone for us tonight, especially in the second half.”

The non-region game for the Lady Cats was very physical with referees blowing their whistles for 62 personal fouls in the 40-minute college basketball game. “It was incredibly tough out there,” said Williams. “Every kid in the gym seemed to have three or four fouls tonight. A lot of wipe-outs under the basket. Both teams played hard all across the court.”

The Lady Cats (4-4) will venture back into the Heart of Dixie on Monday night when they head to Boaz, Alabama to take on the Lady Parsons of Snead State.

Georgia Northwestern Lady Cats (80) – Kiarra Parks 18, Nichelson 4, Sierra Smith 11, Mariah Price 24, Odessa Person 12, Jones 6, Daughtry, Cole 5, Mostella.
