(Walker County, GA) – Ridgeland High School is the target of yet another top student-athlete in 2013 as Georgia Northwestern inks competitive cheer standout Makayla Derryberrry. This is Cats Cheer Head Coach Karen Stoker’s second regional signing for the college’s first NJCAA intercollegiate cheerleading program.

Makayla’s first memories of cheering are from age five. Before cheering in middle school and high school in the Walker County school system for six years, the Bobcat student-athlete signee first cheered in elementary school. “I’ve just always liked the activity. It’s so athletic and really competitive,” said Derryberry. “I’m just looking forward to the opportunity to perform on the collegiate level. Being able to move on and go after what I’d like to get in college is exciting.”

After graduating from Ridgeland this spring, the Panther standout plans to pursue a nursing degree at Georgia Northwestern Technical College. “I’ll be going after a physical therapy degree after that,” said Derryberry. “The opportunity to be a college student-athlete is going to be great!”

Derryberry joins LaFayette’s Tara Clark as some of the cornerstones of the year one program which kicks-off at GNTC this fall. Georgia Northwestern is launching their intercollegiate cheerleading squad this fall as they will perform this first season for the college’s NJCAA Region XVII Men’s and Women’s Basketball programs which run from November through March.

“What I love is that we have truly competitive high-school athletes seeking us out and we couldn’t be prouder to be their first choice,” said Georgia Northwestern Athletic Director David Stephenson. “Coach Stoker has done an amazing job of recruiting this off-season. I think we are going to be in for a real treat as she continues to pick up the key pieces as signing season continues in NJCAA.”
